Beginner (Scuba Diver)
The NAUI Scuba Diver course is an entry-level course designed to teach the fundamental knowledge and skills needed to dive safely in open water. The course is presented in 3 phases: Academic Knowledge, Confined Water Training and Open Water Training.
Academic Knowledge (eLearning/Home Study): This portion of the course familiarizes students with the basic history, science, equipment and practices of Scuba. You can complete the knowledge portion of the program online through the NAUI Scuba Diver Education System eLearning, or you can read through the textbook and complete the Student Workbook. Alternatively, you can also arrange for classroom instruction with an instructor for a small additional cost. Academic training must be completed before beginning Confined Water Training sessions.
Confined Water Training: Over the course of 6 evenings (9 hours), students will view, learn and then practice swimming, snorkelling and diving skills under the direction of professional dive instructors. In a safe and supervised pool environment participants will learn equipment assembly, entries, mask and snorkel clearing, basic rescue and safety, and all the skills required for safe and comfortable diving, with ample opportunity to discuss their learning and its application to actual diving.
Open Water Training: Once students have achieved competence and confidence in the pool, the real diving begins. Over the course of a weekend, students complete their certification with 5 open water dives in a protected area of the St. Lawrence river (usually at Brockville or Prescott). Day One allows students to practice what they've learned in the pool in a real dive environment, introduces wetsuits, and covers skills like underwater navigation. Day Two features two dives on the historic wreck of the Conestoga, near Cardinal, Ontario. The open water dives can also be completed in warmer climates during store excursions, or by Universal Referral Program.
